Today is the day, it's the Girls Just Wanna Have Fun! Blog hop! hosted by my friends Jaycee DeLorenzo and Victoria Smith.
I shall be introducing you to Lena, the heroine from my upcoming debut novel THE CHARGE. As spokesperson from the Texas Freedom Campaign and with her choices in men making her a paparazzi magnet, Lena is no stranger to being interviewed. Desperate to be taken seriously, Lena generally won't entertain interviews with inane tabloid questions, but in this one case she'll make an exception, for her thirteen year old foster sister's feature article in her middle school paper.
Brianna sat up straight in her chair, her hair tied back in a professional twist, and held her new pen with a pink fuzzy ball on the end expectantly. Lena had to smile. She had never seen anyone look quite so serious while holding such a silly pen.
Brianna looked down at her paper and read her first neatly written question. "Who is a better kisser, Warren or Will?"
"Seriously? That's your question? Brianna..."
Brianna betrayed a tiny smile. "You said personal questions were okay. Please? Off the record? Who is the better kisser?"
"Victory," Lena said.
"You mean the Senator's daughter?" Brianna said with wide eyes.
"That's the one."
Brianna seemed to have no response to that. Lena figured both Will and Warren would appreciate that answer.
"Oooookay," Brianna said, "I know you turned Will down for a date the first few times. What made you change your mind?"
Lena smiled to herself and thought. "I'm not sure. It was a gut decision. He's from a family of politicians. I can tell when he's being real and being fake. And he acted real around me. He also smells fantastic."
"But you liked Warren even more...."
"Not at first. I didn't really think much of him in fact. He was cute, of course. But unambitious. Ignorant of the world. Reckless."
"So why did you choose him?"
"These things aren't always rational. I just knew."
"On your first date with Will, he came to pick you up in a limosine with secret service guards and you went to that really fancy restaurant where you said the wine costs more than the mortgage, right? Where did Warren take you on your first date?"
"It depends what you mean by "date". In the beginning, we didn't really leave the hotel room."
"Oooooo...." she taunted comically.
Lena could feel herself blush. "That's not what I mean. We were fugitives. We couldn't do out."
"So how would you describe your hero?
Lena couldn't help but smile when she thought of him. "He's the kind of man who would be happy with a simple life. Grilling burgers in his backyard. Coaching his kid's baseball team. He's just a good man."
"He probably won't have a life like that," Brianna said quietly.
