The Most Awesome Genre

I am participating in a writer's blog hop and this week's topic is "What's Your Favorite Genre?" The answer is easy--science fiction and fantasy. I don't care if that counts as two. If you like, I can lump it all together as "speculative fiction."

The bottom line is this...I live every day in the real world. I find the real world to be a wonderful place, but come on, I spend all day here, I want to escape to somewhere else. I want to go to a place where magic is real and anything is possible. Within the speculative umbrella, my favorite stories are the ones that are magical and realistic at the same time. I like books that are set in the real world, preferably the present. I like imagining magic could exist in my own world.

I also want to say that I have a special place in my heart for novels that are "genre confused." I really struggled with defining my first novel, The Charge. And, I'm proud to say that I never really did. It's unique and doesn't fit well into any specific category. Yes, it's harder to market these books! But, I don't mind being a little different.

What's your favorite genre?

  1. I love this genre as well - and I lump them together! So many great YA novels fall into this genre and I do enjoy them.

  2. I'm like you, I like things that are different and can't necessarily be categorized. That said, I like hist fic that is "user friendly".
I love the new blog look btw :-)

  4. Sharon,
Thanks for sharing about your favourite genre(s) and for participating in the blog hop. I find it interesting how we are similar and diverse as writers. I guess that's a good thing, because readers are looking for diversity :)

  6. Yes, Sharon, the fictional world we dip into shouldn't be as tied-down and restrictive as our own. For me, as long as it's fiction and not too dark it doesn't feel like real life, because the characters are different in temperament and abilities as well as being in different situations. Happy writing and reading!
